About Venice International University

Venice International University (VIU) is a collaborative academic institution based on the island of San Servolo in Venice, Italy. It brings together over 20 universities and research centers from around the world. VIU promotes interdisciplinary dialogue and international exchange through teaching, research, and academic events.

Faculty members from VIU’s global consortium have the opportunity to participate in teaching, curriculum development, and research activities in an international, interdisciplinary setting.

Teaching Opportunities

Each semester, VIU invites faculty from its member institutions to apply for teaching positions in the Globalization Program. This program offers courses to undergraduate and master's students, focusing on global themes such as sustainability, innovation, public policy, and cultural exchange.

Key details:

  • Courses are 6 ECTS (approximately 36 contact hours + student support and assessment)
     
  • Courses are taught in English
     
  • Lectureships are open to tenured or tenure-track faculty (or equivalents)
     
  • VIU provides accommodation and partial travel support for selected lecturers
     

Course proposals are expected to reflect VIU’s commitment to academic excellence and interdisciplinary education.

Summer Session Teaching

VIU also offers a four-week Summer Session in August. This program includes in-person teaching in Venice as well as a short virtual pre-course component.

  • 40 total hours of instruction (36 in-person + 4 co-curricular)
     

Suitable for faculty interested in intensive, short-term engagement

The VIU PhD Academy is a series of advanced, interdisciplinary training programs designed for PhD candidates from VIU member institutions. These academies are hosted on VIU’s campus in Venice and focus on urgent global topics that demand collaborative and cross-disciplinary research.

Faculty Participation:
Faculty members from VIU’s global network are invited to contribute as academic coordinators, lecturers, mentors, or facilitators. Participation provides an opportunity to engage with early-stage researchers, exchange expertise across disciplines, and co-develop innovative research methods and discussions.

Structure and Themes:

  • Duration: Typically 5–7 days, in-residence on San Servolo island.
     

  • Format: Combines keynote lectures, research presentations by PhD participants, group work, mentoring sessions, and thematic roundtables.
     

  • Each academy is co-organized by at least two member institutions to ensure international academic collaboration.
     

Faculty Roles May Include:

  • Delivering keynote or thematic lectures
     

  • Mentoring doctoral students during group discussions
     

  • Providing feedback on research presentations
     

  • Facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration exercises
     

  • Leading methodological or professional development workshops (e.g., publishing strategies, ethics, proposal writing)

VIU Graduate Seminars are short, high-level academic programs that bring together graduate students, early-career researchers, and faculty for in-depth exploration of a focused interdisciplinary theme. 

Faculty Involvement:
Graduate Seminars are organized and led by faculty members from one or more VIU member institutions. Faculty take a leading role in conceptualizing the academic theme, structuring the curriculum, and delivering lectures and discussions. VIU provides logistical and organizational support, as well as access to its global student network.

Structure:

  • Duration: 3 to 5 days (in-residence in Venice)
     

  • Participants: 15–30 graduate students (Master’s, PhD, postdoctoral researchers) from multiple disciplines and countries
     

Benefits for Faculty:

  • Curriculum innovation and collaborative course development
     

Increased academic visibility within VIU’s global network

Proposing a Seminar:

  • Faculty from VIU member institutions may submit proposals through annual calls.

VIU Graduate Seminars are high-level, intensive academic events that bring together master’s students, PhD candidates, post-docs, and faculty to explore a specialized theme in depth.

Key Features:

  • Duration: 3–5 days, held in Venice.
     
  • Topics are advanced and interdisciplinary, such as heritage conservation, sustainability transitions, data ethics, European integration, etc.
     
  • Participants engage in lectures, discussions, case studies, and collaborative projects.
     
  • Faculty from multiple institutions lead the seminars, encouraging cross-institutional dialogue.
     
  • Includes networking opportunities with academics, practitioners, and fellow researchers.
